What You Will Need

Special Equipment

  • Bamboo skewers, for stacking the meatballs
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife or pizza cutter
  • Plastic drinking straw, for punching out the cheese eyes
  • Toothpicks

The Ingredients

  • 21 fully cooked meatballs (beef, pork, or turkey, completely defrosted!)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated pizza crust dough (like Pillsbury)
  • 1 stick of string cheese (mozzarella)
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 cup marinara sauce, warmed, for dipping

Let us Get Cooking!

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Skewering the Mummies

To get started, you are going to skewer your fully defrosted and precooked meatballs. A quick note if kids are helping here: bamboo skewers have a sharp point, so an adult should handle the actual skewering step while kids watch or help with the next parts. You are going to be threading three of them together on a stick. Push them tightly together. If you use a standard bag of 21 meatballs, that gives you exactly 7 good sized mummies. Once you have got all of your meatballs skewered, put them off to the side.

3. Prep the Dough

Roll out your Pillsbury pizza crust dough flat onto a cutting board. Just take your sharp knife or a pizza cutter and slice the dough lengthwise into thin 1/4 inch strips.

4. Wrapping the Mummies

Now, wrap those dough strips around your skewered meatballs. Try to crisscross them in a pattern to look like mummy bandages, and make sure to leave a little spot open near the top meatball for the face and the eyes! Important: this is raw pizza dough, so do not let kids (or anyone!) taste it while wrapping. Raw dough can carry food safety risks, and everyone should wash their hands after handling it, before touching anything else.

Pro tip from my own trial and error! I did not realize the pizza dough was not going to expand much in the oven. I thought it was going to puff up way more! So, do not be afraid to wrap them a little heavier than you think you need to. Wrap them generously!

5. Remove the Skewers and Bake

Once they are wrapped, gently and slowly slide the bamboo skewers out of the meatballs. Place the wrapped mummies directly onto your prepared baking sheet. Bake for 17 to 22 minutes, or until the pizza dough is crispy and golden brown on the back and the meatballs reach an internal temperature of 165°F, confirming they are fully reheated through. Let them smell like awesome pizza!

6. The Eyeball Hack

While the mummies cool slightly, take your stick of string cheese. You shove a plastic drinking straw straight through a piece of string cheese to punch out perfect little white cheese circles for the eyes. Cut smaller pieces of the cheese stick first to make it easier. Pop them out of the straw.

7. Add the Pupils

For the pupils, I originally wanted to use tiny pieces of black olive, but they were just so tiny and hard to work with. I decided against the olives and went with ketchup! Just dip a toothpick or the edge of a cheese piece into a little bit of ketchup and dot the eyes. If young kids are helping with this step, an adult should handle the toothpick since it has a sharp point. It actually gives them some awesome bloodshot eyes!

8. Assemble and Serve

Gently press two cheese eyes into the open face gap you left in the dough of each mummy. If they will not stick, use a tiny extra dab of ketchup on the back of the cheese circle as edible glue.

Pull them out of the oven, serve them immediately with a big bowl of warm marinara blood for dunking, and bite their heads off! Happy Halloween, I hope you enjoy the holiday, and please be safe!

Turn This Into a Full Halloween Dinner

These mummy meatballs are usually served as a fun appetizer or snack, but they also make a great centerpiece for a full kids Halloween dinner if you round them out with a couple of easy sides:

  • My Easy Homemade Garlic Bread pairs perfectly with the marinara dipping sauce and keeps the whole meal in the same cozy, pizza-adjacent flavor lane.
  • A simple side salad or some roasted veggies balances things out if you want a slightly more complete dinner plate.
  • Serve 2 to 3 mummy meatballs per person as a main course portion instead of 1 as an appetizer, and you have got yourself a genuinely fun, kid-approved Halloween dinner idea that still feels like a party.

FAQs

Can I make Mummy Meatballs ahead of time?

Yes! You can absolutely assemble and wrap the meatballs in the pizza dough up to 12 hours in advance. Just place them on your parchment lined baking sheet, cover them tightly with plastic wrap, and store them in the fridge. Bake them fresh right before your party so the dough gets nice and crispy.

Can I use raw meatballs instead of precooked ones?

I highly discourage it! Raw meatballs release a ton of grease, fat, and moisture while they cook. If you wrap them in raw dough, all that liquid will soak right into the dough, making it a soggy and falling apart mess. Always use fully cooked and defrosted meatballs for the best results, and confirm they reach 165°F when reheating.

What is the best way to make the cheese eyes stay on?

If you are having trouble getting your little string cheese eyes to stick to the meatball face, just use a tiny dab of ketchup on the back of the cheese circle. It acts perfectly as edible glue before you press it into the dough gap!

Can I cook Mummy Meatballs in an air fryer?

You sure can! If you want to skip the oven, place the wrapped meatballs in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd them! Cook at 330°F to 350°F for about 8 to 10 minutes until the pizza dough is golden brown and puffy and the meatballs are steaming hot throughout.

Is this a safe recipe for young kids to help make?

With some adult supervision, yes! The wrapping and decorating steps are genuinely great hands-on activities for kids. Just have an adult handle the sharp bamboo skewers and toothpicks, remind everyone not to taste the raw pizza dough, and make sure hands get washed after handling the raw dough before moving on to other tasks. As with any small, bite-sized food, keep an eye on very young children while they eat.

A spooky, kid-friendly Halloween treat! Three juicy meatballs stacked together, wrapped in crispy pizza dough bandages, and served with bloodshot cheese eyes and warm marinara dipping sauce.

Ingredients

  • Equipment Needed:
  • Bamboo skewers

  • Cutting board

  • Pizza cutter or sharp knife

  • Plastic drinking straw

  • Toothpicks

  • Baking sheet and parchment paper

  • Ingredients:
  • 400g (21) fully cooked meatballs, completely defrosted

  • 226g (8 oz / 1 can) refrigerated pizza crust dough

  • 28g (1 stick) mozzarella string cheese

  • 15g (1 tbsp) ketchup

  • 240g (1 cup) marinara sauce, warmed

Directions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Thread 3 completely defrosted meatballs onto a bamboo skewer, pushing them close together. Repeat until you have 7 skewers. An adult should handle this step if kids are helping.
  • Unroll the pizza crust dough onto a cutting board. Using a knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough into long, 1/4-inch wide strips.
  • Wrap the dough strips around the meatballs in a crisscross pattern like bandages. Leave a small opening near the top meatball for the eyes. Do not taste the raw dough, and wash hands after handling it.
  • Carefully pull the bamboo skewers out of the stacked meatballs and place the mummies onto the baking sheet.
  • Bake for 17 to 22 minutes until the dough is golden brown and crispy and the internal temperature of the meatballs reaches 165°F. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly so the cheese eyes will not melt off immediately.
  • To make the eyes, slice the string cheese into smaller chunks, then push a plastic drinking straw through the cheese to punch out tiny, perfect circles.
  • Dip the tip of a toothpick into the ketchup and dot the center of each cheese circle to make bloodshot pupils. An adult should handle the toothpick if kids are helping.
  • Place the eyes into the gap left on the mummy’s face.
  • Serve warm alongside a bowl of marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Do Not Use Raw Meatballs: Raw meatballs release grease and moisture as they cook, which will make the dough soggy and cause it to fall apart. Always use precooked, fully thawed meatballs.
  • Wrap Them Well: The pizza dough does not puff up or expand drastically in the oven, so wrap the meatballs generously and thoroughly so they hold together nicely.
  • Making the Eyes Stick: Use a tiny dab of ketchup or mayo on the back of the cheese circle as edible glue if the eyes are sliding off.
  • Olives vs. Ketchup: Tiny flecks of black olive work as an alternative pupil if you prefer a classic black look.
  • Raw Dough Safety: Do not eat raw pizza dough. Wash hands after handling it before touching other food or surfaces.
  • Sharp Tool Safety: Bamboo skewers and toothpicks have sharp points. Adults should handle these steps if young kids are helping.
  • Meatball Temperature: Reheat fully cooked meatballs to 165°F internally to confirm they are properly hot before serving.
  • Allergen Note: Contains gluten (pizza dough) and dairy (string cheese). Meat type varies by the meatballs used.
  • Small Pieces: Supervise very young children while eating, as with any small, bite-sized food.
  • Nutrition: Calories are estimated and will vary based on meatball size, dough thickness, and marinara amount.
