These mummy hot dogs are standard hot dogs wrapped in thin strips of crescent roll dough, brushed with egg wash, and baked at 350°F for 13 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Candy googly eyes stuck on with a dab of mustard or ketchup finish the look. Total time is about 30 minutes, and no baking skills are needed.
I am going to tell you how to make cute and adorable mummy hot dogs. Seriously, this is a really basic Halloween recipe that kids and adults both love.

Let Us Get Cooking
1. Let Us Talk About the Dough
To make these mummy hot dogs, you can use whatever kind of dough that you want, honestly. Use a refrigerated crescent dough sheet because it is really easy to work with, you know? It saves so much time.
2. Preheat and Prep
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. How to Cut Your Strips (The Math Is Easy, I Promise)
Unroll the refrigerated crescent dough sheet onto a clean surface. First things first, you are just going to lightly flatten the dough sheet a bit with your hands or a rolling pin just to make it nice and even. And then, cut it lengthwise into thin strips with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter.
Now, listen up for the quantities. If you are making a total of 8 hot dogs, you are going to use about two strips of dough per hot dog. That means you are going to cut the whole sheet into 16 strips. If you are going to make, like, 10 hot dogs, just make sure that you cut your dough into 20 strips, okay?
4. Wrapping Your Mummies
Have your hot dogs ready, and just start at one end. You are going to make the little head first, so roll the strip of dough around the top. Make sure you leave a small gap open for the mummy face.
Then, just keep rolling and wrapping the hot dog with the strip. Once you get to the end of the first piece, grab the second strip and start wrapping your hot dog all the way down. Do not worry about making it perfect. Criss crossing makes it look more like a real mummy.
5. Patch the Top
Right before you get to the very end of your second strip, rip off a tiny piece of the excess dough and use that to cover that big hole that we have on the top of the mummy head. And that is pretty much it for the wrapping. Place the wrapped hot dogs onto your prepared baking sheet.
6. The Egg Wash (Optional, but So Good)
Now you are going to brush them with just a little bit of egg wash. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the dough on each hot dog with the beaten egg. This is optional, but I love to do it so that they come out nice and shiny from the oven. You know, it just gives them that extra touch. Wash your hands after handling the raw egg.
7. Bake
Bake at 350°F for about 13 to 15 minutes, or until the dough comes out beautiful and golden brown. Keep a close eye on them. The hot dogs should be steaming hot all the way through when you pull them out.
8. Add the Eyes
Once baked and slightly cooled, the last thing to do is make the eyes. You stick them on with a little mustard or ketchup. Dab two tiny dots of mustard or ketchup onto the open face area of each hot dog. Press the candy googly eyes or sesame seeds right onto the dots so they stick. Some people like to use sesame seeds, but I personally like to use candy googly eyes just to make them cuter.

FAQs
Can I make these mummy hot dogs ahead of time?
Yes, you totally can. If you are prepping for a Halloween party, you can wrap the hot dogs in the dough a few hours ahead of time. Just place them on a baking sheet, cover them tightly with plastic wrap, and keep them in the fridge. When you are ready, give them a quick egg wash and pop them in the oven.
What if I cannot find seamless crescent dough sheets?
No problem at all. You can absolutely use a standard tube of crescent rolls, including Pillsbury style refrigerated crescent dough. Just unroll the dough, press the perforated triangles together with your fingers so it forms one solid sheet, and then cut your strips just like normal.
How do I get the googly eyes to actually stick?
The trick is to use food as your glue. Just take a toothpick and dab a tiny speck of mustard or ketchup right where you want the eyes to go. Press the candy googly eyes or sesame seeds right onto the dab, and they will stick perfectly.
Why is my dough slipping off the hot dogs?
Hot dogs come out of the package pretty wet, which makes the dough slide around. Just take a paper towel and pat the hot dogs completely dry before you start wrapping. It makes a huge difference, I promise.
Can I use puff pastry instead of crescent dough?
Yes, puff pastry works and gives you a flakier, more layered texture. Cut thawed puff pastry into thin strips and wrap the hot dogs the same way. Puff pastry brands can call for a different oven temperature than crescent dough, so check your package directions and bake until the pastry is golden brown and the hot dogs are steaming hot.
Can I make mini mummy hot dogs with cocktail sausages?
Definitely. Mini cocktail sausages make fun mummy finger hot dogs that are perfect for a party platter. Use thinner, shorter strips of dough and wrap them the same way. They will bake faster than full size hot dogs, so start checking them a few minutes early and pull them out once the dough is golden.
Are these mummy hot dogs safe for young kids to eat?
For older kids, yes, and they are a great hands-on project. For toddlers and very young children, there are two things to watch. Whole hot dogs are a known choking hazard, so cut them lengthwise into smaller pieces before serving. Small candy googly eyes are also a choking risk, so skip them or remove them for little ones and draw eyes with a dot of ketchup or mustard instead.

Sharp knife or pizza cutter
Pastry brush
- Ingredients:
1 (8 oz / 226g) can refrigerated crescent dough sheet
8 standard hot dogs
1 large egg, lightly beaten (optional, for egg wash)
Mustard and ketchup, for sticking on eyes and dipping
16 candy googly eyes (or sesame seeds)

- Unroll the crescent dough sheet and flatten it slightly to make it even.

Notes
- Dough Swaps: If you can’t find seamless crescent dough sheets, you can use regular crescent roll dough, just pinch the perforated seams together before cutting. Puff pastry also works, follow the package directions for temperature.
- Pro Tip: Pat your hot dogs completely dry with a paper towel before wrapping. This helps the dough stick to the hot dog much better while baking.
- Storage: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in an air fryer or oven to keep the dough crispy.
- Don’t Stress: Seriously, do not worry about making these perfectly. Mummies are supposed to look a little messy and undone.
- Food Safety: Hot dogs should be heated until steaming hot throughout. Wash your hands after handling raw egg wash.
- Kid Safety: Whole hot dogs and small candy eyes are choking hazards for young children. Cut hot dogs into smaller pieces and skip the candy eyes for toddlers.
- Allergen Note: Contains gluten (dough), egg, and likely soy or dairy depending on the dough and hot dog brand. Sesame seeds, if used for eyes, are a major allergen.
