  • No fancy equipment needed! You don’t have to buy an expensive espresso machine or even a mini milk frother. A simple cocktail shaker or a mason jar is all you need.
  • It’s lightning-fast. We are talking 45 seconds from start to finish. You can totally do this on a busy weekday morning.
  • It’s completely customizable. You can use standard dairy or swap in your favorite non-dairy alternatives, whatever floats your boat!

What You’ll Need

Special Equipment

  • A 16-ounce cocktail shaker (or a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid)
  • A small pitcher (optional, for pouring)

The Ingredients

  • ½ cup / 120g Heavy cream (or heavy whipping cream)
  • ¼ cup / 60g 2% milk (or non-dairy options, like oat milk)
  • 1 Tablespoon / 15g High-quality vanilla syrup
  • 1 pinch Sea salt (optional, for elevated flavor)

Let’s Get Shaking!

1. Chill Your Equipment (My Ultimate Bonus Tip!)

For the best results, chill your cocktail shaker or mason jar in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes before starting. If you use a cocktail shaker, you might notice frost on the outside. That’s on purpose! The goal is to keep the ingredients and the mixing container as cold as possible. This will help make the absolute optimal cold foam texture. Just make sure the ingredients are chilled and not frozen, and you’ll get perfect foam every single time!

2. Getting Started: Your Ingredients!

You’re gonna kick this off with a half cup of heavy cream. You can also find it under its other marketing name, heavy whipping cream. They both are the exact same product, so don’t worry about it! They’re usually sold in plastic bottles or small cardboard milk containers, and you can usually find them in the dairy section.
Go ahead and add it to your mixing container. I’m using a standard 16-ounce cocktail shaker, but honestly, a mason jar with a lid also works great, and it’s even easier to find around the house!

3. Milk & Vanilla Goodness

Next up is a quarter cup of milk. I recommend using 2% milk, but you can also use non-dairy options, like oat milk. Seriously, whatever floats your boat! Pour that right in with the heavy cream.
And the next ingredient is one of my personal favorites: vanilla syrup! You will need one tablespoon of vanilla syrup for this sweet cream cold foam. Just remember, no matter what vanilla syrup you use, make sure it’s high quality.

4. Add a Pinch of Salt (Optional)

This vanilla cold foam is currently great as is, but if you want to add a bit of extra flavor, you can add a pinch of sea salt as the last ingredient. It just, like, elevates it, you know?

5. Secure the Lid & Shake, Shake, Shake!

Now that all the ingredients are added, it’s time to froth or shake for 30 seconds! Place the lid on your cocktail shaker or mason jar, making absolutely sure that it is very secure to avoid a huge mess. Seriously, you do not want to clean that up.
Shake the container hard for about 30 seconds. (You can also use a frother if you prefer!) Whether you’re frothing or shaking, the goal is to have the mixture triple in volume.

6. Checking Your Foam

Carefully remove the lid and inspect the cold foam. It should have increased in volume and it also should look similar to soft serve ice cream. Like, seriously, it’s that good!

  • If it ends up too thick: Blend in a little bit more milk.
  • If it’s too thin: Pop the lid back on and keep frothing or shaking!

7. Serve and Enjoy

Once it’s perfect, pour that fluffy cold foam right over the top of your beverage

FAQs

What is the difference between Starbucks Cold Foam and Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam?

Great question! Regular Starbucks Cold Foam is usually just frothed non-fat milk, so it’s a lot lighter. Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Foam, on the other hand, is made with a rich blend of heavy cream, 2% milk, and vanilla syrup. It’s inherently sweeter, thicker, and honestly, way more decadent!

Can I use different types of milk for cold foam?

You totally can! I recommend 2% milk because it balances the heavy cream perfectly, but you can definitely use non-dairy options like oat milk or almond milk. Seriously, whatever floats your boat! Just remember that the heavy cream is the most important part—that’s what gives it that thick, soft-serve texture.

Why isn’t my cold foam getting thick enough?

If your foam is looking a little sad and thin, it’s probably because your ingredients or your container aren’t cold enough! My ultimate bonus tip is to use a frosted shaker. Keep your heavy cream and milk chilled right up until you use them. If it’s still too thin, just pop the lid back on and keep shaking!

How do I store homemade cold foam?

If you make a batch and don’t use it all, you can store the mixture sealed in the fridge for up to three days. Just remember to give it a really good shake or froth again right before you serve it so it gets that fluffy volume back!

Notes

  • Pro Tip: Keep the ingredients and the mixing container as cold as possible (chilled, not frozen!). This is the secret to getting that perfect, thick texture.
