So, you know how sometimes you just want to make something a little extra special, right? Like, not just for a party or anything, but maybe just because? Or, you know, because it’s a special day like Valentine’s Day!
That’s totally what inspired these heart-shaped chicken nuggets. I literally love chicken nuggets, so I thought, why not make them super cute? It’s actually easier than it looks.
Why You’ll Love This
- The Secret Ingredient: We are adding grated apple. Yes, apple! It sounds wild, but it keeps the chicken incredibly moist and adds a subtle sweetness that balances the savory elements perfectly.
- The Crunch Factor: Instead of just plain breadcrumbs, we’re using crushed cheese and onion crisps (potato chips) for the coating. It hits different.
- Totally Customizable: I made hearts because it was Valentine’s, but as I always say, “It’s up to you.” You can make them round, long, small, or dinosaur-shaped. You do you!
What You’ll Need
Special Equipment:
- Food Processor (essential for the texture)
- 6cm Biscuit Cutter (Heart shape, or any shape you have—even a rabbit one works if you tweak it!)
- Large frying pan
- Wire rack for draining
Ingredients:
The Chicken Base:
- 375g (approx. 13 oz) Chicken breast fillets, cut into rough chunks
- 1 Large onion, peeled and diced
- 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 Small apple, peeled and grated (The secret weapon!)
- 45g (approx. 1 cup) Fresh white breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp Ginger paste
The Crispy Coating:
- 60g Cheese and onion flavor crisps (potato chips), crushed finely
- 60g Dry breadcrumbs
- Oil for shallow frying (Vegetable or Canola)
Let’s Get Cooking!
1. Prep the fresh ingredients
First things first, prep your ingredients! You’ll want to get your onion all peeled and diced, and the fresh parsley chopped up. And that apple? Peel it and grate it. The addition of apple gives these nuggets a delicious, moist flavor. Then, get your chicken breast fillets ready by cutting them into chunks so they’re easier to work with.
2. Blitz the breadcrumbs
Now, time for the food processor magic! First, pop your fresh white breadcrumbs in the food processor and give them a good whiz until they’re, like, super fine.
3. Make the chicken paste
Then, add the chicken, onion, parsley, grated apple, the fresh breadcrumbs you just blitzed, and the ginger paste into the processor. Give it a few seconds of chopping until everything is well combined. You want it to be a nice, consistent mixture.
4. Prepare the coating
Grab your cheese and onion flavor crisps and crush them up really, really finely. You can do this in the food processor too, or just crush them in a bag—whatever works for you! Mix these crushed crisps with your dry breadcrumbs in a bowl and spread it out on a plate.
5. Shape the hearts
Okay, so this is where it gets cute! Use a 6cm biscuit cutter to press out heart shapes from your chicken mixture.
Pro Tip: I didn’t actually have a heart-shaped cutter, so I literally just used a rabbit-sized one and shaped it myself! I made the rabbit size into a heart. So yeah, if you don’t have a heart-shaped cutter, just try another shape and keep it fairly simple.
6. Coat the nuggets
Press each little heart-shaped nugget into the crisp/breadcrumb coating mixture, making sure it’s completely covered.
7. Fix the shape
Don’t worry if it’s not perfectly heart-shaped when you take it out of the cutter, because you can just fix it. You can totally adjust it even after it’s out of the mold. It’s up to you if you want it small, round, or long. So just shape them how you like!
8. Fry them up
Heat enough oil for shallow frying in a pan. You want it nice and hot! Carefully place your heart-shaped nuggets into the hot oil. Flip them when they’re golden brown, and cook until they’re golden and crispy on all sides.
9. Drain and serve
Once they’re done, take them out and let them drain on a wire rack. And that’s it! You’ve got these super cute, delicious, and moist chicken nuggets ready to enjoy! Perfect for a special treat or just because you feel like it. Enjoy!

Ingredients
- Equipment Needed
Food Processor
Frying Pan
Cookie Cutters (optional)
- Ingredients
375g (13 oz) Chicken breast fillets, cubed
1 Large onion, roughly chopped
2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped
1 Small apple, peeled and grated
45g Fresh white breadcrumbs
1 tsp Ginger paste
60g Cheese and onion flavor crisps (potato chips)
60g Dry breadcrumbs
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Directions
- Blitz the Binder: Place your fresh white bread (crusts removed is best) into the food processor and pulse until you have fine, fresh breadcrumbs.
- Make the Meat Mixture: Add the chicken chunks, diced onion, chopped parsley, grated apple, and ginger paste into the processor with the fresh breadcrumbs. Pulse and blend until the mixture is well combined and consistent—like a thick paste.
- Prepare the Coating: In a separate bowl or bag, crush the cheese and onion crisps until they are very fine. Mix these with the dry breadcrumbs and spread the mixture onto a flat plate or tray.
- Shape the Nuggets: Take a portion of the chicken mixture. If you have a 6cm heart cutter, press the mixture inside.
- Coat: Gently press each shaped nugget into the crisp/breadcrumb mixture. Ensure it is completely covered on all sides. The natural moisture of the apple-chicken mix will help the crumbs stick.
- Fry: Heat about an inch of oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Carefully place the nuggets in the hot oil. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Remove from the pan and let them drain on a wire rack (this keeps them crispier than paper towels). Serve hot!
Notes
- The Apple: Don’t skip it! It doesn’t make the nuggets taste like fruit; it works like zucchini in baking to keep the lean chicken breast from drying out.
- Shaping: If the mixture is too sticky to handle, wet your hands slightly with water or oil before shaping.
- Storage: These freeze great before frying. Just lay them flat on a tray to freeze, then bag them up.
